With the infusion of federal stimulus funds to rebuild the seismically unsafe Golden Gate Bridge approach, several public agencies had to quickly agree on a relocation plan for The Crissy Field Center. The building’s design was selected because it met the sustainability and scheduling criteria required for this project. The building houses high performance classrooms, a science lab, offices and the Beach Hut Cafe. Dubbed a “smart” building, Crissy Field Center utilizes integrated technology to optimize environmental, economic, and human performance. It combines key attributes such as abundant natural daylight, low-VOC content materials, photovoltaics, wind turbines and optimal acoustics to achieve an environment that enhances learning without compromising aesthetics or affordability. From conception to completion, the entire project took nine months; a remarkable achievement made possible by the building type and phenomenal teamwork. The result: a spectacular new landmark on prime San Francisco waterfront. It is undoubtedly a model for sustainable development, and is certifed LEED Platinum.
