THE PRESIDIO’S NATIVE PLANTS FLOURISH IN NEW
GREENHOUSE COMPLEX

FDI completes new facility in the heart of urban National Park

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (May 13, 2010)—The nation’s only urban national park, The Presidio, commemorated the opening of its brand new greenhouse complex yesterday with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Rehabilitation of the Presidio’s landscape is an important component of the Presidio’s mission: to restore the landscape to its historic past. Their efforts called for a state-of-the-art facility to research and care for the native flora.

FDI demolished the condemned WWII-era buildings, performed extensive site work, installed new utilities and poured the foundation using waterproof concrete. The 1,050 sf pre-fab building used as the laboratory and nursery was set on the foundation and an additional greenhouse was also erected on site. Sustainable construction methodologies were used during every phase of the construction.

“This was a truly dynamic endeavor, because our work on the Greenhouse Project was part of a larger, evolving plan,” explained Steve Kolos, Project Manager. “When scope was added, it had to be design/built due to the project stage. We incorporated the changes and adhered to our original schedule. It was intense and extremely gratifying.”
